Get ready to unleash your creativity with pigments and wax during the Encaustic Explorations Workshop with Cherie Peters, Saturday, June 1, 1-3 p.m. at the SMAC Art Center. The word encaustic stems from the Greek work Encaustikos, meaning “to burn in.” In art it refers to the abstract painting techniques that rely on a heat gun and wax to fuse layers of color to your painting.

Cherie will show you how to use a heat gun properly to apply smooth and textured layers and how to fuse the layers and pigments to your surface. She will demonstrate how to make marks or decorate a surface, add glazes (color) and polish the finished piece. Then she will guide you as you create your own encaustic art.

Most everything is included in this workshop. You will need to wear gloves. Latex gloves will be provided, so if you are allergic to latex bring your own. You may also want to bring a mask for fumes. Cherie will have fans to help clear the air. Wear paint clothes or an apron. The fee for this workshop is $65, but thanks to the City of Hollister Parks and Recreation Department, Hollister residents only pay $32.50.

About the Instructor: Cherie Peters, a seasoned artist and former K-12 Art Educator, has transitioned from the classroom to the tranquil landscapes of the Lake of the Ozarks and beyond. In retirement, she teaches Expressive Arts virtually from her motorhome and shares her love for nature through art classes in the Midwest to the Adirondack mountains of New York. Inspired by the enchanting allure of the Gulf Coast, Cherie gathers treasures like oyster shells and driftwood to create mixed-media artworks infused with the essence of coastal beauty. Currently volunteering at the Dewey Short Visitor Center at Table Rock Lake, she continues to draw inspiration from nature's bounty. Cherie invites viewers to join her on a journey of exploration and imagination through her art.
