Get ready to unleash your creativity with pigments and wax during the Encaustic Mixed Media Workshop with Cherie Peters, Tuesday, October 29, 6-9 p.m. at the SMAC Art Center. The Greek word Encaustikos meaning "to burn in". Referring to the process by which pigmented wax is fused by heat to the artworks surface. Encaustic painting is in like no other form of painting. It is a medium where you have to trust your instincts and paint in the moment. The best way to learn and work with the medium is to create painting after painting, focusing on a different technique each time. This introductory workshop includes safety protocol with demonstrations of wax application for smoothness and texture, fuzing with a heat gun between each layer, incising (mark or decorate), glazing (adding color), embedding items such as paper, metal, fabric, wire, and found objects, polishing, and clean up. Participants will then apply that knowledge to create small encaustic paintings on blocks of wood.
Most everything is included in this workshop. You will need to wear gloves. Latex gloves will be provided, so if you are allergic to latex bring your own. You may also want to bring a mask for fumes. Cherie will have fans to help clear the air. Wear paint clothes or an apron. The fee for this workshop is $65, but thanks to the City of Hollister Parks and Recreation Department, Hollister residents only pay $32.50.
About the Instructor: Cherie Peters, a seasoned artist and former K-12 Art Educator, has transitioned from the classroom to the tranquil landscapes of the Lake of the Ozarks and beyond. In retirement, she teaches Expressive Arts virtually from her motorhome and shares her love for nature through art classes in the Midwest to the Adirondack mountains of New York. Inspired by the enchanting allure of the Gulf Coast, Cherie gathers treasures like oyster shells and driftwood to create mixed-media artworks infused with the essence of coastal beauty. Currently volunteering at the Dewey Short Visitor Center at Table Rock Lake, she continues to draw inspiration from nature's bounty. Cherie invites viewers to join her on a journey of exploration and imagination through her art.
